PPN Midlands Ethnic Representation in the Workforce discussion paper v1.1 070125.pdf

PPN Midlands, in collaboration with the University of Birmingham and the British Psychological Society, has published an important discussion paper, Ethnic Representation and the Practitioner Psychology Workforce in the West Midlands. This paper offers a snapshot analysis of workforce ethnicity within two Midlands Integrated Care Systems (ICS), comparing it to local population demographics and NHS mental health service users. It highlights key areas for improvement, including better data collection and alignment, targeted outreach to diverse communities, and initiatives to attract a more representative workforce. This foundational work calls for action to address disparities and provides a framework for further exploration across other psychological professions.

PP Week 2024 - Psychologically Informed Crisis Care (Presentation Only)

PPN-SE Event for PP Week 2024

Date: Tuesday 12th November 2024

Time: 10:am - 12:00pm

This PPN-SE session will focuses on Psychologically Informed Crisis Care and was the launch of the guidance developed by our PPN SE Crisis Care Leadership Fellows.

Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Teams (CRHTTs) sit in a pivotal place in the urgent care pathway. They act as gatekeepers for acute inpatient beds, facilitate early hospital discharge and provide person centred interventions in a home environment. Many people accessing these services have experienced trauma and are dealing with current distress. It is crucial that CRHTTs are set up to offer compassionate evidence-based care and avoid traumatisation.

At the beginning of the year the PPN-SE secured funding to look into how these teams could work in a psychologically informed way, and the outcomes which may follow from this. The remit of the work was to produce a paper and set up a community of practice in the South East of England around crisis team work.

The paper is now complete, and recommends a psychologically informed model which is focussed on these teams, but is also generalisable to other mental health teams. The paper also acts as a toolkit for a variety of mental health professionals who want to think about teams in a psychologically informed way, and how to change cultures. The voice of the service user was key in this work, and aligns with the principles and factors proposed.

A Psychologically Informed Crisis Care Best Practice Guidance report is available on the PPN-SE Website in Resources-Publications.

We will upload the recorded session which discusses this document on 6/01/2025.
