The theme of the fifth annual conference of the North West Psychological Professions Network was championing the role of the psychological professions and specifically our contribution to supporting individuals and communities who have experienced trauma.

During the morning session the key note speaker Dr Noreen Tehrani, Chair of the Crisis, Disaster and Trauma Section of the British Psychological Society laid out the case for the psychological professions taking a lead in developing and delivering trauma services.

The North West has experienced its own incidents of trauma in recent months and the clinical panel was made up of senior psychological practitioners who have led the development of the Manchester Resilience Hub. This ground breaking service has been hailed as a national example of clinically led innovation and coordinates care and support for children, young people and adults whose mental health and/or emotional wellbeing has been affected by the Manchester Arena attack. The Hub is based in Greater Manchester but is for everyone who was affected, wherever they may live.

For the afternoon session we heard about the recently published Stepping Forward to 2020/21: Mental Health Workforce Plan for England. This is Health Education England’s response to the Five Year Forward View for Mental Health and Future in Mind and lays out the agenda for workforce planning and development until 2021.

The Five Year Forward View for Mental Health was published in February 2016 and sets out the start of a ten year journey for mental health services within the NHS. It places the experience of over 20,000 people with mental health problems at the heart of its narrative and proposes a set of recommendations that have now been incorporated into the mandates for National Health Service England (NHSE) & Health Education England (HEE) to achieve the ambition of parity of esteem between mental and physical health care.

The fourth annual conference of the North West Psychological Professions Network provided an opportunity for psychological professionals working in NHS commissioned services in the North West to hear about the vision set out in the Five Year Forward View alongside the joint NHSE and HEE implementation plan.

The North West Psychological Professions Network Annual Conference took place on Tuesday 10th November 2015 in Bolton and had a focus on Wellbeing of the Workforce.

Wellbeing in the workplace is receiving a lot of attention with a recent speech by NHS England Chief Executive Simon Stevens emphasising the need to support NHS staff as they have some of the most critical but demanding jobs in the country. NICE have also launched new guidance in this area: Workplace Policy & Management Practices to Improve the Health and Wellbeing of Employees emphasising the critical role mental health and wellbeing makes to the quality of the workplace.

At the conference, we learned about the national context and research into workplace wellbeing. We also heard about how a local organisation is using Schwartz Rounds to support their staff with the emotional demands of looking after people.
